France heading towards a hung parliament

Author: The leftist New Popular Front (NFP) grabbed the top spot in the second round of the French legislative election on Sunday in a major upset over the far-right, according to projections. The New Popular Front (NFP) was expected to have 172-215 seats, whereas French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist Ensemble alliance was in second with 150 to 180 MPs. Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally unexpectedly landed in third place with 120 to 152 seats.
The snap election was called by a weakened President Macron, in response to a surge in support for the far-right party led by Marine Le Pen. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who was appointed by President Macron only seven months ago, has said he is planning to resign, while President Macron has been asked to step down.
France is now heading for a hung parliament with no party expected to achieve an overall majority. The biggest group in the left-wing alliance is led by the radical socialist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who may now become Prime Minister.
