More Singaporeans eligible to vote in next General Election

More Singaporeans eligible to vote in next General Election (GE)- CNA online 22 July 2024.

There are a total of 2,715,187 registered voters, an increase from 2,709,407 voters eligible to cast their ballots in the 2023 Presidential Election.

It is clear that the bulk of the increase in registered voters comes from new citizens. That, even my uneducated China born grandmother would have understood.

I have said it in my past commentaries and I will repeat it here. Most new citizens are decent people and they contribute and add value to our economy. We welcome them, however however, each and everyone of them have done their sums, the pluses and the minuses vs remaining as citizens of their native country before they took the plunge to be called Singaporeans.

Each one of them have their private agendas of becoming our citizens, be it for their business reasons, career advancement, the vast opportunities here that their native countries are unable to offer them, the conveniences, the safety and many, many more.

Unlike our native born Singaporeans, their love for and loyalty towards Singapore are unlikely to rank among the top 5 reasons for taking up our citizenship.

I believe that it will be an eye opener for Singaporeans if the pap government is willing to be equally transparent also to disclose just how many new citizens give up their Singapore citizenship and move elsewhere in the first 10 years after being granted citizenship.

In the face of fast, fluid and changing circumstances, absolutely no policy should be craved in stone. Our national policies should be implemented with our national interest in mind, first and foremost and not the interest of the People's Action Party. ( Please read the last sentence again).

I have always advocated that all new citizens must not be allowed to vote in our GE at least in the first 10 years after being granted citizenship.

GE is not kid's stuff. The result of it will decide the kind and quality or the lack of it of our political leadership, the direction our country will embark, it will affect the employment opportunities of our people, their livelihoods, our safety, environments, housing, cost of living and much more.

To allow large numbers of Newly Minted Citizens with untested, unproven and maybe even questionable loyalty, love and commitment etc to Singapore to influence our country's and our collective future in our GE is obviously utterly stupid and unwise, dangerous even.

Think.

How else will they gather more supporters? Simon can only whine and whine, and in that whining process, drives the new voters more to that side. Unthinking, or a mole.

In a video posted by trade union the CGT on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, staff members were seen lining a hotel corridor demanding a pay increase and social benefits. They held signs reading “Luxury hotel, poverty wages” and “No 13th month, no Olympics!”

New citizens give up Singapore citizenship and emigrate to other countries?

Can not rule out the possibility!

But this would happen mostly to people who could easily return to their countries of origin to start afresh. Caucasians from countries in Europe, America, Australia, New Zealand are more likely to do that than those people from countries with very strict and highly selective citizenship laws.

People with permanent residential status are more likely to give up their rights to permanent stay in Singapore for various reasons, not fully committed in Singapore should be the prime cause of action.

Given with a base population of almost 4 million people, over a period of 4 years, an increase of less than ten thousands new voters is not a very big increase. We have more than twenty thousand local life births annually, don’t we? A more relevant question to ask is why only about 9 thousand new voters, what happened to the rest of them?

    This increase is insignificant.
We need ‘quality voters’ especially more discerning younger educated ones.

GRC is opposite of the PAP’s MANTRA OF DEMOCRACY.

    https://gutzy.asia/2024/07/15/singapores-birth-rates-decline-by-5-8-as-total-fertility-rate-drops-below-1/

Shouldn't the number of death (resulting in removal of voters) outpace the addition of new voters instead? The only explanation is new citizens!

We know that new citizens are used by the MIW as votebank for the longest time. In fact, upon giving out citizenship to these wannabes, the immigration authorities always stressed to them the importance of being loyal to the country and the party. Too late to do anything, we had been screwed.

The new citizens = 100% PAP votes.

The additional 16,000 PAP votes is just sidd dish.
The new PAP citizen votes in the 2.7m count must be of great assurance to lhl.

One reason why so many more private apartments were built all over the island in order to accommodate these new citizens.
It is also no wonder why HDB are not building enough flats for Singaporeans & takes at least a 5 years wait to move into one.

If PAP is smiling & high five behind closed doors because of the hundreds of thousand new citizen votes, be assured that there maybe equal number of Singaporeans who will use their votes this time to bring PAP to task.

    We shall wait & see.

Wouldn’t worry too much about the new guys lah to be honest. Supposedly 20k to 22k are given citizenship yearly but it’s puzzling why PAP can’t even get 70% of the votes in the last election don’t you think? After people online saying new citizens outnumbering us true blues you would logically think that PAP will easily win 70% and above in any election since the new dafts, errrr, citizens would just blindly vote for them is that not true?

So it’s either that there aren’t as many new citizens converted per year or, heaven forbid, the new guys aren’t as daft as PAP assumed and actually voted for the opposition oh wow!

Guiatr man will again try to frighten voters by saying coalition government bad lah, gridlock lah cannot smoothly do things lah etc etc. But look at it from another perspective and come to this realisation instead below.

It’s precisely why there is a stable government that the cost of living has shot up so much so fast. Same for why GST is at 9% now and wages have stagnated. A stable government has nothing and no one to oppose them whenever they want to do something detrimental, at most people will make a lot of noise but eventually the matter blows over.

So why give PAP the strong mandate that they are always asking for? Why bother with a majority in parliament when someone you know has been forced into driving for Grab or delivering makan? Might as well force them into a coalition government so that they cannot do whatever they want whenever they want is lagi better.

We see it now in the America and Donald Trump’s barbaric herd (oddly, boosted by “evangelical Christians”, Billy Graham’s son, of all persons!) American “democracy” has forgotten that, at crucial times, one has to be undemocratic in order to preserve democracy. There were rules in place to eliminate Trump, but it seemed, to those who had the power and means, that that would be undemocratic. And so, they have allowed democracy itself to now be threatened.

What the GOP is doing for 2 decades now (together with Fox News) is to give up this idea entirely, imagining that people will never accept their view on politics, and then MASSIVELY spread fake news to keep them voting for them anyhow.

This piece reminded me of a couplet written roughly 70 years ago. Here is the translation. “Democracy is a form of government in which you count but not WEIGH the voters!”. As to our (Singapore) present situation. Any fool can see it’s, essentially, an OLIGARCHY. Even the hoi polloi is aware of this, as is demonstrated by the 38.76%. For God’s sake, everyone knows it. Democracy has never been an end goal, something that happens once we solved all other problems and all become part of a “circle of common thought”, but a MEANS to solve them and get to a better, more thriving society as a whole.

At the same time, the extent to which a democracy is de facto installed, depends on two things: a Constitution that guarantees its pillars (separation of the 3 branches of government, freedom of speech and gathering, etc.), AND the active engagement of its citizens; SOMEONE willing to challenge the plebs’ (61.24%) patriotic hubris.

And nobody can solve—until the BUBBLE inevitably burst.
In the meantime pretend that HDB99=ZERO is not a clear and present danger.
Many HDB flats including most of Serangoon and Bishan were build prior to 1985.
Which means in 2025, Bala’s Curve will kick HDB backside and Lawless Wong.
The 40 year-old ghosts appear in about 600,000 very old HDB flats.
Sinkieland celebrates 60 year anniversary—and we will get our GST vouchers,
Most sinkies will remain in zombie state.
Their children will take up 30 year old HDB loan —becoming lifetime slaves.
Now the amount is $700,000. instead of $7000 in his parent’s time.
Sinkies will continue to live in FEAR and DESPERATION….waiting for whatever handouts papigs throw at them from collected GST.

Having tax evaders living in your midst is not healthy.

Not everything is appropriate for risk taking. All that party is telling the whole world is last time they earned easy money and the industry wasn’t competitive. Now cannot cope therefore must sell their stake.

What risk are they taking? How many of them have worked with German stakeholders before? Not the NCM. Not LBH. Germans are not the most difficult people to work with but they are not on the easy side of the scale. Why Germans cannot take 49%? It’s because they don’t want their motions blocked, that simple.

Committing 100m in the next decade is nothing because the amount amortized over 10 years for social causes is not spectacular. In addition, the devil is in the details. We have no idea once the acquisition is complete, how they will get rid of locals from the industry or depress their renumeration silently. Might as well say that they have been resting on their laurels for donkey years thinking that the industry was as rosy as before. Why much higher social expenditure these days? Because they couldn’t rein in the COL and more lower income people in the midst?

Try asking that party to sell a ministry like ministry of trade or EDB to a foreign enterprise for 51% stake. It won’t be worth lesser than 2billion. Similar argument why MTI isn’t crucial to make the numbers for the nation. Try selling the whole national population and talent division to a foreign enterprise for 51% since our talents cannot make the fertility numbers and foreign talents are really so good. SPH also can sell instead of dumping 900m in 5 years down the drain to them. For SPH, it’s 180m per year and NTUC Income, it’s 10m per year.
