I have more praises than criticisms for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's (LW) National Day Rally.
He covered many issues and among them, the extra 10 weeks of shared newborn leave, involuntarily unemployed persons getting up to $6,000/ over 6 months and changes to the Education Gifted Programme for primary schools etc.
In this commentary, I will touch on 3 issues.
As early as April 2022, Workers' Party's MP Louis Chua has already called on the pap government to adopt a shared parental care leave but he was not successful and fast forward to last night, LW announced an almost identical 10 extra weeks of shared newborn leave, save for some minor spins and twists here and there.
Regarding the above, those people who are in-tune with our national political discourses on both sides of the divide will know and those people such as my friend a certain Mr Leong who only knows how to suck pap propaganda and only listen to the 'right stuff' will not care and definitely will not know. He lives in lalaland.
Next, $6,000/ for those who suffer involuntarily employment.
Although Chee Soon Juan is not an MP, as early as 2016, he similarly said that if elected, he would push for unemployment insurance for our workers.
Again, last night, LW announced that involuntarily unemployed persons getting up to $6,000/ over 6 months, again giving Chee's suggestion some spins and twists and called it pap's.
The original suggestions of the above mentioned 2 schemes came from the oppositions and I am disappointed that LW didn't at the very least, acknowledge and express thanks for their inputs and ideas which his government adopts years later and call them their's.
Expressing thanks or extending a simple acknowledgement gesture will not make anybody looks small, short or stupid.
I suspect that a stronger and more confident person would have done that.
Last but not least, our cost of living issues and challenges. Nothing was mentioned about tackling our cost of living challenges. It is real, it is biting people and it is hurting people.
Giving people vouchers and a couple of hundred dollars here and there, as and when are at most piecemeal patch up jobs. Of course they help to some extent but they are only short term, they are temporary and over time, they could breed a softie, beholden and handout mentality in our citizens.
This generation of pap leaders must not just know how to pay themselves handsomely but go after low hanging fruits only.

First of all, the extra 10 weeks will not bring up the fertility numbers.
Seasoned citizens know that even if the baby bonus is included, the budget for it is nowhere near the yearly scholarships and other benefits for foreigners, including PRs. Ask around and the consensus is no kids to secure retirements.
Next, GEP and GEP issues has been around for a long time. Waiting till LW comes on board to announce is as good as saying there are too many yes men beside CCS or, he hasn’t taken it seriously so many years when at helm before LW’s ascension.
Thirdly, unemployment safety net has been long overdue but TSL, besides getting old did not treat it as a priority. In fact, one of the laziest ministers around, doesn’t have any legacies to his name.
LW can and should get more votes which should be taken from CCS and TSL, since oppo has raised the issues before.

The MIW cannot solve cost of living (COL) issues because they are the primary reason for it. By paying themselves sky-high and rewarding their faithful flock of civil servants, they are a cause of high COL. Further exacerbating the problem is their strategy of giving citizenship in return for a vote to the ruling party. More new citizens only exacerbate cost pressure in an already tight and constrained city. This can be seen in the record breaking prices in HDB and COE.
Solving COL problem directly hurt their vested interests. Between the people’s interests and theirs, guess who will win?

When ‘two is enough’ policy set, the campaign launch was so aggressive, films, advertisement, phamplets and posters everywhere.
Just wondering will there be any campaign to encourage more children?
Some thinking:
1) The slogan ‘have three or more, if can afford’ sounds a bit stressful, seems like emphasizing about money again.
Maybe use slogan like ‘the more the merrier’, ‘多多益善’,’人多好办事’.
2)Have some advertisement or posters on public transports especially buses, printed with lovely children faces.
3)Replace all the posters/banners on children’s tuition classes or courses with the family campaign banners.
4)Maybe get famous artiste (eg swift tylor) to sing campaign songs to boost up the family numbers.
Probably this campaign looks more sincere, hope it works.

PAP main strategy of increasing productivity is a very stupid idea in the age of innovation and modern times today. Invention and research require time and lots of money input with no results and no money output. One cannot have innovation by measuring productivity. Strike Gold one time but all the time have zero or negative productivity is how innovation make money in many companies like google. Many jobs productivity also cannot be measure because the nature of modern jobs. Productivity seem to be a business and money concept which is narrow, not relevant for many jobs like service which require care and many unmeasurable aspect. Productivity is for old factory age which is outdated and for short term gain, resulting in failure of many companies and the use of wrong employee. Training workers to increase productivity or for money making is not what a nation should do. Training for productivity is short term gain. Training should be for overcoming short coming, long term and other aim. Singapore as a nation should not aim for narrow aim and only for short term money strategy like increase productivity. For so many years, Singapore chase money, change Singapore direction and force workers change careers from finance, computing, biotech to green with training without care for worker as a person. Nations like “Taiwan build Tsmc” overtake Singapore. Now nations like Malaysia, Vietnam, India, China who are behind Singapore, all overtake Singapore with high GDP growth and Singapore said it can only grow 1% to 3% prove Singapore strategy all these years are stupid.

Payout for the involuntarily unemployed is a good beginning.
But we must have checks in place to prevent abuse.
Since PAP is reading my post, I suggest 3 major checks to prevent abuse.
1. Employee must be of good character, not the cheating type who work 3 months than purposely got himself terminated (involuntarily unemployed) to claim the benefits. And he repeat the same trick again in the next company.
2. Employee must show that he/she is able to perform well at their job but was regrettably terminated (involuntarily unemployed) due to company downsizing.
3. Employee must show that he/she is a responsible person, hard driving and hard striving and is able to stay in a job for 2 years.
Telling lies is a serious matter. It will destroy a country.
