Super typhoon Yagi batters Hainan island in China

Author: Heavy rains and strong winds swept through Hainan province Friday as a powerful typhoon, dubbed Yagi, made landfall in China. The storm triggered widespread outages and carried maximum sustained winds of 234 km/h.
Considered the second-most powerful tropical cyclone in 2024, Yagi has doubled in strength since hitting the Philippines earlier this week, leaving at least 16 people dead.
As typhoon Yagi edged past Hong Kong towards Guangdong province in China, residents on the island of Hainan braced for what they expected would be a historic super typhoon, shutting down all non-essential services and businesses.
