A more open, consultative approach

Just like PM Goh and PM LHL when they first took over the helm, PM Wong is saying that he believes in a more open, consultative approach.
In both PM Goh and PM LHL’s case, when their PM-ship ended, the government and society was not freer, but more oppressive.
As a student before PM Goh’s term, I was carefree and enjoyed my childhood, didn’t have to endure tuitions and yet became reasonably well educated and coherent. But today, students are so stressed, they need counselors, medication, and sadly, some have taken their own lives.
Even though my father had to work hard to support a big family, he was happy and managed to squeeze time for meals with the family, mahjong, and beer with friends. Today, work-life balance is a pipe dream for many people.
Before anyone says “time has changed”, let me remind him that it is people who create the type of society we live in, and it is even easier for Singapore to choose to be a freer society given that we have long achieved material adequacy, has reasonable reserves and the people sufficiently educated.
Still, it is good that PM Wong wants to give it another shot. But is building a “more open and participatory society” simply a matter of having more conversations with the public and soliciting suggestions and acting on some of them?
I am afraid not. On the contrary, all these suggestions will likely be more trouble than help, even oppressive, because while it looks good from the State’s point of view, it is the person who is affected who knows what is best for himself. While the State’s intention is good, it is often off target. It is best to leave the person to do what he wants to do, so long as it doesn’t encroach on other people, rather than have it done for him or imposed on him, unless PM Wong wants to create a nation of sheeple.
The fact is that successive governments, starting with LKY, has created a system so huge and powerful, that everyone has to look to it for every improvement in their lives. It is a system created for the good of everyone, but is oppressing everyone, including PM Wong himself.
So, PM Wong may well seduce the people with more freedom, since he is still wet behind the ears and since election is around the corner, would he really dare rock the boat?
If he truly wants more diversity and a more participatory society then he should let workers have a real union; scrap the restrictions on free speech, free assembly and free press; rather than waste everyone’s time with choreographed dialogues.

When I travel widely, I find the world so different from the stereotypes that my grandma and aunts told me. Even China can be so different from the village that my grandma came from.
In Singapore, zi char stalls have Hong Kong Fried Noodles. But I cannot find Hong Kong Fried Noodles in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong has Singapore Fried Beehoon (with Cantonese BBQ Pork and eggs and onions). But Singapore Fried Beehoon does not exist in Singapore.
In Singapore and Hong Kong, there is Yangzhou Fried Rice (with Cantonese BBQ Pork and shrimp and eggs). But Yangzhou does not have Yangzhou Fried Rice. Fried Rice in Yangzhou does not have Cantonese BBQ Pork or shrimp.
Halal restaurants in Yunnan China is so different from halal food in Malaysia. Yunnan’s halal restaurants has goose meat. And they sell generous amount of goose liver at affordable price. Compare to fois gras at French restaurants.
I was surpised to see Muslims in Yunnan.

The real defining issue is raising the GST twice during a global inflation. Harping on this specific point alone will bring over the fence sitters in this election. The other, in fact, more important issue is the number of foreigners allowed into Singapore. There are close to 40% non-Singaporeans in this tiny island. The rise of foreigners and PRs has caused severe strain in accessing timely healthcare, severe overcrowding everywhere. The quality of life has significantly dropped. Singaporeans are very overworked and very stressed.
So, for more opposition to diversify parliament, they need to focus on these four essentials: a) raising of GST twice adding hardship to the people; b) the overcrowding from excess foreigners and timely accessibility to public social goods, resulting in a significant drop in quality of life; c) extreme competition for Singaporeans in terms of job accessibility; d) poor CPF returns for retirement and e) gerrymandering diluting the voices of the people, as a whole
Harping on high cost of living alone did not work in past elections, but the blatant disregard for the people`s welfare by raising GST twice with zero GST exemption on essential food items and services is the stance to be taken. Moving away from any of these five dimensions is unwise for those who seek a place in parliament.

Annually, Japan sells about 1.2 million cars to the United States but the Japanese imports much less cars made by the United States.
Reasons being:
Most Japanese roads are built basing on the size of Japanese cars which are much narrower as compared to that of the United States . Their car parks parking lots are smaller too, unable to accommodate the much larger American cars.
The worst is the fact that Japanese cars are right hand drive whereas the American cars are left hand drive. Japanese cars exporters are mindful of this and Japanese made cars for export to the USA will be built left hand drive. However, the American car manufacturers refuse to do the adjustment for cars meant for the Japanese market, American cars in Japan will build left hand drive despite knowing that all cars in Japan should be right hand drive.
