When foreigners criticize PAP leaders, they are deemed to be "interfering domestic politics" and are deported or jailed immediately including diplomats. However, when they sing generous praises of them, their articles are given extensive coverage by the mainstream media. (read article here) An Indian national who dared not even pen down his/her name has written an article in praise of PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew which was surprisingly published on SPH's Asiaone website. (read article here) The PAP-controlled media has gone on a propanganda overdrive of late to build a cult figure around the octagenarian Lee who turns 87 a few days ago with articles fawning on him while critical letters from Singaporeans calling him to step down were censored and unpublished. "As an Indian national working in Singapore for the last four years, I have come to admire greatly the Singapore model of growth and, more particularly, its long-enduring leader Lee Kuan Yew," he/she wrote. The writer then went on and on rehashing the age-old PAP rhetoric that "western style" liberal democracy is unsuitable for Singapore: "Despite the carping criticism about the absence of a Western style liberal democracy, there are many things about Singapore which raises envy even in the West. Freedom does not mean merely the freedom to discuss or air one's freewheeling views. It also means the freedom for a woman to return home safely from work at 1am, for children to be free of a drug and gun culture and people to go about their daily chores without the fear of strikes and work-stoppages." Beneath the facade of Singapore's stability and prosperity lies a ticking time bomb which will destroy the social fabric of the nation if left unattended. Lee's tight control of Singapore politics and economy means that there is little room for alternative and dissenting views to be air publicly and debated on. Singapore's economic growth is built largely on the mass import of cheap foreign workers which is unsustainable in the long run, leading to widespread repercussions such as a widening income gap between the rich and the poor. Democracy is simply a system of governance in which there is an institutionalized check and balance to hold the ruling party accountable to its words and actions which is sorely lacking in Singapore. Concerned about its chances at the next general election, the increasingly unpopular PAP regime has "converted" another 3,000 foreigners into new citizens (in an instance) to add to its voting pool in order to secure another "overwhelming" mandate. It is not known how many new citizens will be voting in the coming election widely rumored to be held at the end of the year, but the PAP regime has updated the electoral registry twice in the last one year alone to include the new citizens. Speaking at the National Citizenship Ceremony, PAP Manpower Minister called on the new citizens to join PAP grassroots organizations: "I encourage you to take the initiative to learn more about other cultural traditions in Singapore, so that you will have a better understanding and appreciation of the Singapore way of life..... to serve as a 'valuable conduit between newcomers (by volunteering) at the grassroots level as Integration and Naturalisation Champions," he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times. According to media reports, there are currently about 4,500 new citizens and PRs who are "serving" as grassroots leaders in various constituencies with some of them being card-carrying members of the PAP as well such as YPAP leader and new citizen from India Sinha Shekhar. PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew had admitted unwittingly himself last year that "all grassroots organizations such as CCs, CCMCs and RCs are part of the PAP." They come under the purview of the People's Association whose Chairman is PAP Secretary-General Lee Hsien Loong. Over at Bishan, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng claimed that the PAP has "listened" to the concerns of Singaporeans by "tightening" the selection of new PRs and citizens which includes bus drivers, cleaners, construction workers, masseurs and even freelance prostitutes previously. Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng acknowledged these concerns at another ceremony held in Bishan. He said the Government has 'acted on them' by tightening the selection of new permanent residents and citizens. "For those who do not speak English, I urge you to make an effort to learn it, as it is the common language of communication among our multiracial population. When you try to speak in the language understood by the other Singaporeans, I am sure they would appreciate it," he told the newly minted citizens. Unlike other countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada, immigrants to Singapore do not have to pass a compulsory English proficiency test like IELTS, leading to quite a number not being able to speak the language and communicate with the ethnic minorities in Singapore. PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew, who is currently in Moscow to dispense his usual "pearls of wisdom", raised eyebrows when he told the audience during a dialogue session with students from the Skolkovo Moscow School of Management that he is no longer in charge of Singapore. When asked by an Armenian student Mr Grant Alaverdian about the goals he would set for Singapore's next generation of leaders, Lee replied promptly: "I'm not in charge anymore, it depends on what the present leaders envision for themselves and how they can take Singapore from where it is, to where they want to go. My contribution now is like an over-the-horizon radar - (telling them) there is opportunity there or there is trouble there..." The octagenarian Lee, who just turned 87 lately, is probably the oldest living MP and minister in the entire world. A former prime minister of Singapore, he nows hold the title of "Minister Mentor", an unique position not found anywhere else. Though he admitted that he is not doing much work except "forecasting", many believe Lee continues to wield real influence behind the Singapore cabinet and is the prime driver behind some of its unpopular and controversial policies such as its pro-foreigner and ultra-immigration policies to increase Singapore's population to 6.5 million people. He echoed it when asked about his dream for Singapore: "Gradually but almost relentlessly, we will become cosmopolitan, international." Due to the PAP's open-door policy to immigrations, foreigners now make up 36 percent of Singapore's population, up from 14 percent in 1990. Of the remaining 64 percent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas. The newcomers coming from diverse parts of the world have diluted the national identity of Singapore, with two out of three Singaporeans polled indicating that they are worried by the relentless influx of foreigners.
