TR EMERITUS

I am an undergraduate wannabe of NTU, staying at home for an extra month (an entire month!), waiting for my refugee status to be lifted and i watch in envy as my NUS comrades saunter into their school grounds, eager for their commencement of tertiary education. And while i wait at home, YOG athletes, and trainers, occupy my school grounds, the halls, the hall that i'm allocated to, the room i've been allocated to, sleeping on the same bed as i would be, sleeping (with the condoms; hey, safe sex, it's important) on the same bed as i would be. This is a cause for concern. i must say i'm a tad bit, uneasy (apprehensive, bothered, choked,) with the notion of sleeping on a bed for four years, knowing that it might've been stained with foreign liquids. which is worst (you call the judge), foreign juice on my bed, or the fact that Youth Olympic Games athletes, Youths!, the leaders of tomorrow, the voice of the generation, members of society, younger than me but with the power of revolutionary change bestowed unto them, doin stuff on my bed, even before i've done mine on that bed (well call me conservative, but i think you buy, and use, condoms after marriage, or okay fine, after you turn 21). sports on the fields, not on my bed. In all honesty, i'ma rather proud of the YOG, or at least the romanticised version of it. it's after all an Olympic games subset of olympic status. to be a country hosting such grandiose events, is an achievement worth quite a bit of achievement points. but the way it was handled, fine, got on some people's nerves, but the way the people's cries for attention, for love, were ignored by their motherland, who turned her affection to foreigners, is applaudable by demonic standards. If my motherlands says, delay your studies for a month, kid athletes want to use your school grounds. by all means i say. contribute what little you have to the YOG my son, for it shall be another face of me, hmmm, okay, but how much are you spending on this again, it's by the mils right? eh motherland, i think i saw some poor people by the stree- you wait at home my proud son, they're gonna screw on your bed too. i'd gladly obe- wait what? Shortly after he was slammed by netizens for being the last person to light the YOG torch instead of the Prime Minister, PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew has made a grand appearance in the press again to dispense his usual "pearls of wisdom" to his subjects. Speaking yesterday at the opening ceremony of the Pinnacle@Duxton PCF Education Centre, Lee repeated his old grandmother story that a "strong" government made it possible for Singapore to survive and progress for the last 45 years. "To build such a Singapore, we need an exceptionally strong Government, with the ablest, the toughest and most dedicated of leaders. We head-hunt for them, test them out in heavy responsibilities," he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times. PAP leaders have always emphasized the importance of a "strong" government for Singapore as the country is too small to afford being "wrecked" by partisan politics commonly seen in other democratic states. Using football as analogy, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said last year that Singapore has only enough "talents" to form a "strong" football team and therefore a two-party state is not feasible here. Law Minister Shanmugan added that a "strong" government with a "clear" majority in Parliament enables it to make "quick" decisions on important matters concerning the nation. The PAP currently holds 82 out of 84 seats in Parliament. During an election rally speech made in 2006, PM Lee said that he would have to spend more time "fixing" the opposition should more of them gets elected into Parliament. Lee also boasted about the PAP's unique system of "meritocracy" again rather unashamedly: "First, leaders of high integrity who have the people's trust and confidence. Second, meritocracy, where everyone can get to the top 'as political leaders, MPs, (in) the civil service and statutory boards. People get to where they are on merit: not guanxi (connections), not nepotism, not corruption. Hence, all are capable and competent." There is a thin line between a "strong" government and a "repressive" one.  Lee obviously still doesn't understand that his outdated concept of a "strong" government is out of sync with the aspirations of young Singaporeans. The "infectious" apathy of Singaporeans has afflicted the doomed Youth Olympic Games right on the very first day as there were plenty of empty seats galore at the stadiums hosting the competitions. The badminton match between India and China was played to an almost empty indoor stadium with the camera crew trying desperately hard to avoid the empty seats to no avail: Over at the Singapore Sports School where the swimming competition was held, there were plenty of empty seats too. There were also some problems with the official YOG webcast as highlighted by netizen Rurik Aurvandil: "Schedule is still all screwed up. YOG 2 for example still reflecting taekwando when they are in fact playing a badminton match. They seem to have some problems filling up the time. According to schedule, got 1 hr "no transmission" from 5 pm to 6pm. The empty seats are so embarassing that they are doing everything they can to avoid showing the seats. As a result, the camera shows the match from "unconventional" angles which make it hard to follow what is happening. Match officials and technical staff still outnumber audience in the few shots where you can see the empty seats." [Source: I hate YOG Facebook] The PAP regime's desperate attempts to promote the YOG in the HDB heartlands floundered spectacularly as well. Contrary to Channel News Asia's earlier boast that Singapore's heartlands have "joined" the YOG "celebrations (read article here), few Singaporeans bothered to participate in the YOG publicity gimmicks or watch the competitions on the giant TV screens set up at community clubs. Only a couple of Singaporeans were seen at Anchorvale Community Club yesterday evening watching the LIVE telecast of the YOG competition with a few aunties appearing more interested to chat with one another than the proceedings on the screen in front: [Source: Vote PAP out Facebook] The YOG has been an embarrassing $389 million dollar FLOP for the PAP regime, prompting IOC President Jacques Roggges to express his concerns at the "subdued" enthusiasm for the games displayed by Singaporeans so far.
