GST increase in 2024GST increase in 2024 On 1 Jan 2024 GST rises 1% from 8% to 9%; this is a 12.5% increase in GST. I am not convinced that this is necessary.

Read More →

7,614 female foreigners arrested for vice-related activities in 2009

7,614 female foreigners arrested for vice-related activities in 2009

According to a Straits Times report today, a total of 7,614 female foreigners were arrested islandwide for vice-related activities in 2009, compared with 5,047 arrests in 2008, of which the percentage of PRs is not revealed. The number arrested is probably less than the actual number of foreigners who work in the booming sex industry in Singapore which has attracted women from all over the world. They ply their trade along the alleys of Geylang, work as hostesses in KTV lounges or solicit for customers openly in internet sex forums, catering to all the major races in Singapore. Some enterprising women have even entered into "joint ventures" with Singapore pimps to offer their services on personalized websites and blogs like weebly. Many of them are in Singapore on temporary social visit passes while some are on study and work permits, "moonlighting" to earn extra cash. The Temasek Review reported two weeks ago of one China National and Singapore PR Jiang Yan who worked as a freelance prostitute in a massage parlor in Chinatown. (read article here) Despite repeated raids by the police, these freelance prostitutes have returned time and again and even manage to expand their "operations" to Kovan, Joo Chiat and Chinatown lately. Though prostitution is legal in Singapore, there is still a market for such "independent" providers of sexual services. With the opening of the two casinos, the number of female foreigners arrested for such crimes look set to increase this year and beyond. PAP leaders have always wanted to Singapore to be a "hub" of all sorts. It is not known if an international "prostitution" hub is on their agenda as Singapore continues to attract such "foreign talents" from China, Malaysia, Philipines, Vietnam, India, Russia, Korea, Thailand and even Eastern Europe.   Please join our Facebook discussion on this article here and invite your friends to do so as well to raise awareness among fellow Singaporeans.  Read More →

China to mourn quake dead as toll passes 2,000

China to mourn quake dead as toll passes 2,000

Reuters, 20 April 2010 China will hold a national day of mourning on Wednesday for victims of the earthquake in Qinghai province as the official death toll from the disaster climbed to 2,039, the government announced on Tuesday. Another 195 people are still listed as missing following the quake, which struck Yushu county, a heavily Tibetan area in the province of Qinghai last Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency said. The nation will pause to mourn the victims on Wednesday, a week after the quake hit, with national flags at half-mast and public entertainment curtailed, the cabinet in Beijing decided, according to the central government website. Despite dwindling hopes, rescuers continued searching for survivors in the flattened town of Gyegu, the county seat of Yushu with some 90,000 inhabitants, spurred by the discovery of three survivors the previous day. An elderly Tibetan woman and her granddaughter were pulled out alive, and a woman in her 30s was rescued after being trapped for 130 hours, state media reported. - Reuters  Read More →
