GST increase in 2024GST increase in 2024 On 1 Jan 2024 GST rises 1% from 8% to 9%; this is a 12.5% increase in GST. I am not convinced that this is necessary. Thai Army Chief Suggests Calling Elections

Thai Army Chief Suggests Calling Elections

By James Hookway from Wall Street Journal Thailand's army chief suggested calling elections after 21 people were killed in weekend clashes between army troops and antigovernment protesters. Meanwhile, Thailand's Election Commission on Monday capped a lengthy investigation by recommending that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's ruling Democrat Party be prosecuted for allegedly accepting illegal campaign donations. The move that could eventually lead to the party being dissolved and forced from office. Thailand's attorney general will have to decide whether to send the case to trial at Thailand's Constitutional Court, where party officials say they will contest the charges. The Commission's decision came toward the end of another tense day in Thailand, one of Southeast Asia's leading economies and a tourism center. Protest leaders paraded coffins containing the bodies of several dead protesters around Bangkok, while army chief Gen. Anupong Paochinda in a news conference urged politicians to find a way out of the crisis. He suggested early elections could be a way to damp tensions and help the bridge the gulf between mostly rural-based "Red Shirt" protesters—known for their red attire—and the government in Bangkok. Political and risk analysts say Thailand's power brokers in the military, the government and other senior establishment figures will likely take the next few days—which coincide with Thailand's traditional New Year holidays—to take stock and decide what moves to take to defuse the situation, while protesters use the holiday to reinforce their numbers on the streets of Bangkok. Early elections could prove the "least bad" available option, said Alastair Newton, senior geopolitical analyst at Nomura International PLC. There is a strong likelihood that a Red Shirt-aligned government would win any new election, analysts say, potentially setting off another series of street protests, this time led by the arch-royalist People's Alliance for Democracy that blockaded Bangkok's international airports in 2008 to force an earlier, pro-Red government from power. A long-term solution to Thailand's political divides remains a long way off, analysts say. Stock prices slid 3.6% on Monday after the weekend violence; Thai markets are closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the holiday. In his first remarks since Saturday's street battles in the historic heart of the Thai capital, Gen. Anupong didn't suggest a timeline for possible elections. That led some analysts to suggest that the army remains committed to supporting Thailand's fragile governing coalition at least until September, when Gen. Anupong is scheduled to retire and is expected to promote several hard-liners to top command positions. And in a move apparently full of symbolism, Thailand's Queen Sirikit and Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn on Monday attended the funeral rites of an army colonel killed during the weekend's fighting. Red Shirt leaders earlier urged Thailand's revered but ailing monarch King Bhumibol Adulyadej to intervene in the crisis. Mr. Abhisit denied Monday that cracks were opening between the armed forces and his coalition government. He warned that "terrorist" elements were manipulating the street protests to bring about a "major change" in the country.  Read rest of article here.  Read More →

Read More →

Online sites win journalism firsts at Pulitzers

Online sites win journalism firsts at Pulitzers

Reuters, 13 April 2010 The chronicle of decisions by doctors caring for patients stranded by the flood, written by Sheri Fink of ProPublica in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine, marked the first time an online service won a top journalism award given annually by the Pulitzer Prize Board at Columbia University. The nonprofit ProPublica is considered by some to be a new model for journalism as struggling for-profit outlets have fewer resources to put toward investigative reporting. The Times magazine published the Hurricane Katrina piece. "This is something we're going to see more of in the years ahead as there's more and more collaboration of news entities when it comes to enterprise journalism," Sig Gissler, administrator of the prizes, said in announcing the winners. In another online first, www.sfgate.com, the website of the San Francisco Chronicle, won for editorial cartooning. The award for the animated cartoons by Mark Fiore marked the first time an Internet-based entry won in that category. A second Pulitzer for investigative reporting went to Barbara Laker and Wendy Ruderman of the Philadelphia Daily News for their expose of a rogue police narcotics squad. "WATCHDOG JOURNALISM" Reporter Michael Moss and New York Times staff won in the explanatory reporting category for writing about contaminated hamburger and food safety issues. Reporter Matt Richtel and Times staff won the national reporting award for writing about the hazards of using cell phones and computers while driving. "The watchdog function of journalism is heavily underscored," Gissler said. "Watchdog journalism is still a vibrant force. "It's been a tough time for newspapers the last few years," he added. "But amid the gloomy talk, the winners and the finalists are encouraging examples of the high quality of journalism across the nation." In the public service category, the Bristol, Virginia Herald Courier won for writing about the "murky mismanagement" of natural gas royalties owed to landowners, the board said. The Washington Post won four prizes. The newspaper's Anthony Shadid, now with The New York Times, won for international reporting for his articles from Iraq, and Gene Weingarten won in feature writing for a story about parents who accidentally kill their children by forgetting them in cars. The Post's columnist Kathleen Parker won in the commentary category and dance writer Sarah Kaufman won for criticism. Tod Robberson, Colleen McCain Nelson and William McKenzie of The Dallas Morning News won in editorial writing for their work exploring social and economic disparities in the city. The prize for breaking news photography went to Mary Chind of The Des Moines Register for a picture of a rescuer trying to save a woman trapped in water. The prize for feature photography went to Craig Walker of The Denver Post for his portrait of a teenager joining the U.S. Army. Among the prizes for letters, drama and music, "Tinkers," a debut novel by Paul Harding, won for fiction. In drama, the winner was "Next to Normal," music by Tom Kitt, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, a rock musical about mental illness in a suburban family. Country music's Hank Williams won a posthumous special citation. The board said his "poignant and simple songs ... played a pivotal role in transforming country music into a major force." Williams died on January 1, 1953. Source: Reuters  Read More →
