Therefore, based on this, parents should realize the...

GST increase in 2024GST increase in 2024 On 1 Jan 2024 GST rises 1% from 8% to 9%; this is a 12.5% increase in GST. I am not convinced that this is necessary. It will contribute to inflation, and cause economic hardship. The handouts to mitigate this are temporary and the increase is permanent. In 2015, when the possibility of GST rising was an election issue...

Mr Tan Kin Lian’s speech at Hong Lim Park, 15 Nov 2008, Part 4

Mr Tan Kin Lian’s speech at Hong Lim Park, 15 Nov 2008, Part 4

NOTE: There will be NO quiz of the week today as we want to focus on the coverage of the minibond protest. Video produced and edited by Jeremy Yau from The Singapore Enquirer [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdImaBjsXe0&hl=en&fs=1] Excerpts from Mr Tan's speech: "If an investigation revealed negative points about the FIs, they ought to be taken to task, fined and penalised to compensate the investors. Share the responsibility and the pain." "Yesterday, I went to my primary school which I studied 50 years ago. I met six senior teachers, they say 'Oh Mr Tan, can you tell us about this credit-linked notes', so I told them, they say 'the government has done a good job in getting compensation for the older people.", so I said, do you know what percentage of people got compensated, they don't know. I told them less than 5%, maybe less than 2%, 98% have not received compensation." "Have you received your compensation ?" (Crowd roars): "NO !!!" "The teachers were shocked, you see those general public, they don't follow closely, they think most people got compensated, actually the number of people who get compensation is very little, only 2%" "Some people asked me, why are these products not sold in America, England, Australia, Malaysia. The investment banks know, if they sell these products in America, they will be sued to compensate 100% and also fined." "In two weeks time I will tell you about the collective legal action. In the meantime, let's prepare the statutory declaration to be resubmitted" EDITORS’ NOTE: We will be publishing MORE photos (more than 50 in all) and Mr Goh Meng Seng's fiery speech tomorrow on this blog, so stay tuned here. In future, all news coverage as such will be found on the revamped Singapore Enquirer website, a joint collaboration between us and a few bloggers which we will announce in 2 weeks’ time. This will be the Singaporekini (prototype), a platform on which we will build an independent online daily to provide Singaporeans an alternative to the government-controlled mainstream media.  Read More →

Mr Tan Kin Lian’s speech at Hong Lim Park, 15 Nov 2008, Part 3

Mr Tan Kin Lian’s speech at Hong Lim Park, 15 Nov 2008, Part 3

Video produced and edited by Jeremy Yau from The Singapore Enquirer [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yXR1iQjg-U&hl=en&fs=1] Excerpts from Mr Tan's speech: "Now we hear from our Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He says 'Investors must open your eyes. The bank pays 1%, if you want 5%, you must take the risk, so you must open your eyes.'" Reading out a letter sent by an investor, S B: "Having absorbed all the comments and opinion by other people, by the MAS, by our senior level ministers including the comment by Minister Mentor, the first impression is that 'our authorities are taking us to task, blaming us, on the ground that we sign the sales document on our own will, and caveat emptor applies, case closed as far as the minister is concerned." "By doing this, MAS and the authorities are without solid evidence, taking sides, in favor of the financial institutions. This is unacceptable, coming from a supposedly, popularly elected government, who should have a fiduciary duty for the trials of the people." "Do you agree ?" (Crowd): "YES !!!" (applause break all around) "So basically he (MM) says we are all to blame" "He is SENILE !!!" (somebody shouting from the crowd and laughter broke out at 5:53) "Basically he says we are also partly to blame, but you cannot as the government, take the side of the financial institutions and says 'all the blame is on you'. In fact, this make me so angry that spurs me not to call it quits." "I don't expect the government to provide financial subsidy for our loss. I don't expect the government to take the side of the investors just because we are citizens. If we had made a wrong and bad decision, we take what comes with it, but it does not absolve the financial institution of wrong on their part." "Do you agree ?" (Crowd clapping): "Yes !!!" "The most decent thing we can expect from our government is to carry out an independent investigation to verify if there were any wrong-doing by the financial institutions. We as investors are not in the position or authority to conduct this investigation." EDITORS’ NOTE: In future, all news coverage as such will be found on the revamped Singapore Enquirer website, a joint collaboration between us and a few bloggers which we will announce in 2 weeks’ time. Mr Tan Kin Lian’s speech at Hong Lim Park, 15 Nov 2008, Part 2

Video produced and edited by Jeremy Yau from The Singapore Enquirer [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x0Qwe2Y_UQ&hl=en&fs=1] Excerpts from Mr Tan's speech: "Some people say, if they find a new swap counter party, hold for five years and get the money back. Now, I don't know if you can get your money back, but I can tell you the Pinnacle Notes are gone, Morgan Stanley is still around." "I want to update you the three petitions I sent to MAS. The first petition was sent on 9 October, so today one month has passed. The petition is signed by 983 people to ask MAS to carry out independent investigations, whether the financial institutions which sell the product had breach the Securities and Futures Act." "I also send a letter, many pages, many pages in my letter, here are the areas in my opinion the law is broken, but this is Tan Kin Lian's opinion, and Tan Kin Lian does not have the power of the government, and I only make some guess.....If the financial institutions have broken the law, the government can bring them to court, but one month has gone, I don't know if the government has conducted any investigation. I write to MAS requesting for a meeting, they say 'No'. I told them I have 983 people in my petition, they say 'No', so I don't know if they will investigate any wrongdoing, so far no news." "I write and ask them 'Can I meet with you ?', They say....(crowd): 'NO !!!", Is that fair ?....(crowd): 'NO !!!", 'Is that FAIR ???....(crowd louder): 'NO !!!' They can't hear you, they are all in Shenton Way. Is that FAIR ??....(crowd even louder): "NO !!!" "Somebody say, no help. If we don't write petition, what else can we do ? Do we give up ? (crowd): 'NO !!!'. Do we give up ? (crowd louder): 'NO !!!" So I shall be here every 2 Saturdays (crowd clap). Actually I want to come every Saturday, but I am afraid you may be too tired. Please get more people to come, so that we can show that this problem cannot just die away, until the problem is solved." EDITORS' NOTE: Parts 3 and 4 will be uploaded later on in the night. In future, all news coverage as such will be found on the revamped Singapore Enquirer website, a joint collaboration between us and a few bloggers which we will announce in 2 weeks' time.
